Using violent offenders as their primary focus, Merz-Perez (executive director, Human Society of Shelby County, Alabama) and Heide (criminology, U. of South Florida) empirically test three theories of how exposure to or practice of animal cruelty may result in violence towards humans. Addressing qualitative and quantitative data, they fail to come to specific conclusions about the matter, but unequivocally assert that "animal cruelty is indeed tied to the affairs and interactions of humans."
