Gastrointestinal problems impact seniors disproportionately. Meiner (nursing, U. of Nevada, Las Vegas) thus introduces a dozen chapters following the general pattern of discussing a specific GI disorder, its cause, physiology, nursing care and quality-of-life issues. Besides a discussion of general symptoms and nutrition, conditions are treated logically from the upper to lower GI tract. A chapter is devoted to irritable bowel syndrome, but inflammatory bowel disease and alternative medicine get minimal treatment.
