G.A. Ilizarov was a Russian doctor who pioneered an approach to extreme foot pathologies that combined surgery and complex apparatuses in correcting deformities. Believing his method to be the best approach to long-term restoration, Kirienko (a former student of G.A. Ilizarov and currently of Istituto Clinico Humanitas, Milan, Italy), Villa (orthopaedics and traumatology, Ospedale Generale Provinciale, Lecco, Italy), and Calhoun (orthopaedic surgery, U. of Missouri, Columbia) present it to an English-speaking audience, including numerous illustrations and photographs. Both congenital and acquired foot pathologies are covered, as are such conditions as lateral, longitudinal hemimelia; axial deviation of the tibial pilon, and burn contractures.
