This introduction to the study of the structures of sugars attached to cells and proteins presents essential elements of glycobiology to undergraduates and other non-specialists in an accessible manner, focusing on stories about what sugars do for cells and organisms. The importance of glycosylation in protein secretion and stability, cell- cell adhesion, and immunity is emphasized, and the glycobiology underlying human disease is explained to place the subject in a biomedical context. Learning features include simple organization, key terms, and chapter summaries. The authors are affiliated with the Glycobiology Institute at the University of Oxford, UK.
