Effgren (rehabilitation sciences, University of Kentucky) and contributers begin by discussing the history of pediatric physical therapy, then describe recent theories and practices based on the WHO's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Using the ICF framework as a guide, they describe the structure, function, and evaluation of the pediatric musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiopulmonary, and integumentary systems, and then discuss physical therapy in schools, pediatric acute-care hospitals, the neonatal intensive care unit, and rehabilitation settings. Other topics include child development and appraisal; family-centered intervention; sports settings for the school-aged child; and assistive technology. The last section presents five case studies which focus on the physical therapy management of cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis, Down syndrome, pediatric leukemia, and Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
