Independent researcher and consultant Kuo seeks to draw out the connections from the basic science of hyaluronan (hyaluronic acid, HA) to the design and performance of HA-based medical products, specifically as a surgical aid and tissue protective agent in ophthalmic surgery, an injectable preparation to alleviate pain of knee osteoarthritis, a barrier in solid or solution form to prevent postsurgical adhesions, and an injectable gel for cosmetic tissue augmentation. He begins with chapters on HA chemistry and rheological properties. Next he addresses standards, tests, and analytical methods and issues of safety. Finally he presents a chapter on clinical performance, mechanism of action, and product characteristics. Annotation ©2005 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
