According to the biopsychosocial model, developed by the late Dr. George Engel, how physicians approach patients and the problems they present is very much influenced by conceptual models of which they are often unaware. Taking into consideration the attributes of the patient as a person (including biological, psychological and sociological aspects) provides for a better model of health care than does the existing biomedical model.
