While preclinical and clinical evidence of the past supported the potential benefit of hormone replacement in women, the recently published Women's Health Initiative (WHI) suggests that hormone therapy does not protect against heart disease and dementia and may actually promote them. Selected papers from a November 2004 conference sponsored by the University of North Texas Health Science Center offer insight into the design and interpretation of the WHI studies, resulting in multiple explanations for the failure of the WHI to support the beneficial effects of hormone therapy.
