Blair, Derek Mitchell, and Karina Blair (all with the Unit on Affective Cognitive Neurosciences in the National Institute of Mental Health Intramural Research Program) set out the scientific understanding of psychopathy and antisocial behavior, and address such critical issues as the definition of psychopathy, the number of psychopathic individuals in society, whether they can be treated, and whether psychopathy can be attributed to nature or nurture. On the last issue, they present their research attributing the disorder to an underlying abnormality in brain development that reduces emotional learning, and suggest that early diagnosis could change how psychopaths are viewed and dealt with.
