Research from 40 multidisciplinary contributors, first presented at a workshop held in Jerusalem in June 1999 under the auspices of the North Carolina-Israel Scientific Research Program. The workshop focused on both basic research and intervention, and authors were encouraged to identify direct and indirect implications of research for treatment as well as the implications of interventions for further research. Sections cover the theoretical framework for autism research; biological perspectives; connections between communication and social interaction; and reviews of several areas of intervention, including preschool education, residential treatment for adults, treatment with drugs, and treatment for sleep problems.
