Understanding and Preventing Violence: The Psychology of Human Destructiveness

Whitaker (psychology, Widener U.) attempts a grand-scale analysis of violence. He looks at violence on a various personal and institutional levels, including school shootings exemplified by the Columbine incident, the activities of American militias and the Japanese Aum cult, the covert activities of the CIA, and the genocidal project of the Nazis. He concludes that what is needed is a "constructive" mentality that recognizes the humanity in others. Little discussion of the structural and systemic causal factors of violence is considered.
