Understanding Violence

Understanding Violence

The fields of biology, sociology, and psychiatry all have significant insight into the causes of violent crime, but there is surprising little coordination of communication between disciplines, argues Englander (Bridgewater State College). She surveys the literature in these and other fields, examining and evaluating their various hypotheses. She argues that definitional distinctions between types of violence must be made if we are to fully understand the phenomenon and, after exploring general issues, focuses on such types of violence as violence mediated by substance abuse, youth violence, sexual assault, spousal homicide, child abuse and physical punishment.
